To determine whether fever and vomiting are risk factors for dehydration in children under 2 years of age with acute diarrhea MATERIAL AND METHODS: Study was observational analytical retrospective type of cases and controls, the sample is 136 children (68 cases and 68 controls), the information was obtained from the medical records of each child included in the study conducted at the Victor Lazarte Echegaray Hospital during the period of 2017 - 2022. RESULTS: 76.1% of patients who had fever had dehydration compared to 21.5% who did not have it. The risk of dehydration due to fever has an OR= 3.277 (95% CI 2.124-5.056) p=0.000. 92.2% of patients who vomited ≥ 4 times a day had dehydration compared to 12.5% of those who did not have vomiting. The risk of dehydration due to vomiting has an OR= 11.2 (CI 4.806-26.102) p=0.000. 100% of patients who had fever plus vomiting ≥ 4 times a day had dehydration compared to 24.4% of patients who had dehydration with only vomiting or only fever. The risk of dehydration due to fever plus vomiting has an OR=4.377 IC 95% (3.124-6.156) p=0.000. The intervening variables associated with dehydration were risk factor female sex (p=0.00); incomplete vaccinations (p= 0.000) and lack of oral rehydration (p= 0.001). There was no significant association with age, duration of illness, use of antibiotics and SCI. CONCLUSIONS: Fever and vomiting are risk factors for severe dehydration in children younger than 2 years with acute diarrhea
