To determine if there is a difference in the absolute count of macrophages, lymphocytes and epithelial cells in colostrum from mothers of preterm and term newborns appropriate for gestational age. Methods: A cross-sectional analytical observational study was performed on colostrum from 40 mothers of preterm newborns and 41 mothers of term newborns in which macrophages, polymorphonuclear (PMN), epithelial cells and lymphocytes were identified and counted. Results: There is a significant difference in macrophage (p=0.000), lymphocyte (p=0.000), epithelial cell (p=0.013) and PMN (p=0.000) counts of colostrum from preterm and term delivery women. The mean PMN count presented the greatest difference, being 181 cells per lamina for preterm deliveries and 75 for term deliveries. Conclusion: A statistically significant difference was found in the absolute counts of macrophages, lymphocytes and epithelial cells in colostrum from mothers of preterm newborns compared to colostrum from mothers of term newborns.
