To determine if the increase in body mass index is a risk factor associated with surgical site infection in patients undergoing abdominal surgery in the HRDT in the period 2017-2021. Material and methods: An analytical, case-control, retrospective study was carried out in which 195 patients exposed to abdominal surgery were included, according to selection criteria which were divided according to the presence or absence of site infection. operatively, the chi square and the statistician odds ratio were calculated. Results: The frequency of emergency surgery, ASA grade IV, dirty wound and prolonged operative time was significantly higher in the group of patients with surgical site infection than in the group without surgical site infection (p<0.05). High body mass index is a risk factor for surgical site infection in abdominal surgery with an odds ratio of 2.27 which was significant (p<0.05). In the multivariate analysis, high BMI, emergency surgery, ASA grade IV, dirty wound and prolonged operative time are recognized as risk factors for surgical site infection in abdominal surgery. Conclusion: The increase in body mass index is a risk factor associated with surgical site infection in patients undergoing abdominal surgery in the HRDT in the period 2017-2021.
