OBJECTIVE: To determine what are the maternal risk factors for intrauterine growth restriction (IUGR). MATERIAL AND METHODS: A case-control study was conducted in 198 patients of the gynecological-obstetrics service of the HRDT during the period January-December 2017, 66 belonged to the case group (pregnant women with neonates with IUGR) and 132 to the group of controls (pregnant women with neonates without IUGR). Measures of central tendency and dispersion were made for quantitative variables (age, number of prenatal controls). In the statistical analysis, to compare the IUGR variables and maternal risk factors such as low gestational weight increase, antecedent of abortion, maternal anemia and gestational hypertension, the Chi-square test was applied, followed by the Odds Ratio for risk estimation. RESULTS: During the study period, 2633 deliveries were attended. 7.2% (190) had IUGR. The average age of the cases was 25.6 (± 7.1) years and of the controls 26.0 (± 6.7) years. The average number of prenatal controls in cases and controls was 6.3 (± 2.5) and 7.5 (± 2.5) respectively. They presented a low gestational weight gain of 45.5% and 37.9%; antecedent of abortion 22.7% and 20.5%; Gestational anemia 28.8% and 12.1%; Gestational hypertension 1.5% and 1.5% for cases and controls respectively. An association was found between maternal anemia with IUGR (p = 0.004) OR = 2.9 [1.4 - 6.1]. No association was found between low gestational weight gain (p = 0.306) OR = 1.4 [0.8 - 2.5], abortion history (p = 0.712) OR = 1.1 [0.6 – 2.3], gestational hypertension (p = 1,000) OR = 1.0 [0,1 -11,2] with the IUGR. CONCLUSION: Maternal anemia is a risk factor for IUGR. The low increase in gestational weight, history of abortion and gestational hypertension are not risk factors for IUGR.
