Objective: To determine if duration of mechanical ventilation for more than 7 days, gestational age less than 37 weeks, birth weight less than 1 500 g, reintubation, use of central catheter, Apgar less than 7 at minute and Apgar less than 7 at 5 minute are risk factors for the development of ventilator-associated pneumonia (VAP) in neonates. Material and me thods: An analytical, observational, retrospective, nested casecontrol study was carried out in 117 neonates undergoing mechanical ventilation: 30 cases and 78 controls, admitted to the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) of Hospital Belén de Trujillo from January 2016 to December 2019. Results: Duration of mechanical ventilation for more than 7 days, gestational age less than 37 weeks, reintubation and use of central catheter are significantly associated with ventilator-associated pneumonia (p<0.05). The multiple logistic regression analysis showed that birth weight less than 1 500g [“adjusted Odds Ratio” (aOR) = 25.753; 95 % confidence interval (CI) =7.015-94.542; p=0.000) and use of inotropes (aOR =9.345; 95 % CI=3.035-28.777; p=0.000) were independent and statistically significant risk factors for development of ventilatorassociated pneumonia. Conclusions: Birth weight less than 1 500 g and use of inotropes are independent risk factors for ventilator-associated pneumonia.
