determine whether parity and exclusive breastfeeding are protective factors for essential hypertension. Material and methods: an analytical observational study of cases and controls was performed, the sample was 75 cases and 75 controls. The patients were recruited from the hypertensive program and from the external offices of both cardiology and internal medicine of the Albrecht and Belén de Trujillo hospitals during the months of August - September 2018. In the waiting environments of the offices a survey was applied with prior informed consent. For the association between variables, the Chi-square test was applied with a p <0.05 as a value of statistical significance, in addition the multivariate analysis was carried out. Results: the average age of the cases was 54.6 ± 7.9 years and the controls 52.9 ± 7.9 years; Of the cases, 61 women had children (81.3%) and 19 fulfilled exclusive breastfeeding (25.3%), of the controls 71 had children (94.7%) and 53 fulfilled exclusive breastfeeding (70.7%). In the bivariate analysis, exclusive breastfeeding is a protective factor for essential hypertension (OR = 0.149, p <0.001, 95% CI: 0.07 - 0.29), the multivariate analysis did not significantly modify the measure of association (OR = 0.162, p < 0.001, 95% CI: 0.077 - 0.339) Conclusion: women who comply with exclusive breastfeeding are less likely to have essential hypertension regardless of the total duration of breastfeeding and the number of children they had.
