OBJECTIVE: To determine if low birth weight is a predisposing factor to congenital pneumonia in full-term neonates of the Santa Rosa II - Piura Hospital. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Observational, analytical, retrospective study of the type of cases and controls, recorded in the database of the Hospital Santa Rosa II - Piura during the periods 2018 - 2019. 146 cases of full-term newborns diagnosed with congenital pneumonia and 292 controls were obtained, which met the inclusion criteria. A statistical analysis was performed with the SPSS version 23 program for the subsequent processing of the results obtained. RESULTS: A statistically significant relationship was found between low birth weight and congenital pneumonia (OR: 2.34; 95% CI 1.47-3.73). 32% of cases and 16% of controls had low birth weight. The variables involved with a significant statistical relationship were the age of the newborn, gestational age, and origin. Multivariate analysis with multiple logistic regression found low birth weight as risk factors (OR: 2.39; 95% CI: 1.49 - 3.83; p = 0.000) and rural origin (OR: 2.28; 95% CI: 1.22 - 4.27; p = 0.010). CONCLUSION: Low birth weight is a risk factor for congenital pneumonia in term infants.
