To determine whether there is a relationship between elevated atherogenic index of plasma (AIP) and nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) in adult patients. MATERIAL AND METHOD: From the collection of data from the medical records of adults seen in the Gastroenterology outpatient clinic between July and December 2022, a cross-sectional analytical study was carried out. After meeting the inclusion and exclusion criteria, 190 were chosen by simple random sample. According to the abdominal ultrasound results, they were divided into groups with and without NAFLD. In turn, the Log10 (TG/HDL) was used to calculate the AIP, which was divided into two groups: elevated AIP (≥0.05) and not elevated (<0.05). In the statistical analysis, the Chi-square, Student's T test and the Prevalence Ratio were calculated. RESULTS: Bivariate analysis determined obesity and elevated mean TG, LDL, VLDL, as well as decreased mean HDL, ALT and AST, to be factors associated with NAFLD (all p<0.05). The prevalence of NAFLD with elevated AIP was 90.2%. The prevalence of NAFLD with non-elevated AIP was 59.7%. Elevated AIP is a factor associated with NAFLD with a prevalence ratio of 1.51, which was significant (p<0.001), confidence interval 95% (1.23 - 1.86). CONCLUSIÓN. There is a relationship between elevated atherogenic index of plasma and nonalcoholic fatty liver disease in adult patients.
