Objective: To determine if low pregestational maternal weight is a risk factor for intrauterine growth restriction. Material and methods: An observational, an alytical and retrospective cohort study was carried out, which included 132 medical records of pregnant women attended at the Trujillo Regional Teaching Hospital and who met the selection criteria; These were divided into two groups: the exposed cohort , mo thers with low pregestational weight, and the unexposed cohort, mothers with normal weight. Subsequently, the relative risk was calculated, and the statistical test used was chi square. Results: The average gestational age was significantly lower in the gr oup of patients with intrauterine growth restriction compared to the group without this complication. Likewise, the frequency of prematurity was significantly higher in the exposed cohort. The frequency of intrauterine growth restriction in infants of preg nant women with low pregestational weight was 34%. The frequency of intrauterine growth retardation in infants of pregnant women with normal pregestational weight was 10%. The low pregestational maternal weight is a risk factor for intrauterine growth reta rdation with a relative risk of 3.33 w hich was significant (p <0.05). Conclusion: Low pregestational maternal weight is a risk factor for intrauterine growth restriction. Keywords: Low pregestational maternal weight, risk factor, intrauterine growth restri ction.
