OBJECTIVE: To determine if the Score for Neonatal Acute Physiological Evaluation with Perinatal Extension (SNAPPE II), with a score of ≥ 40 points, is a good predictor of mortality from neonatal sepsis. MATERIAL AND METHODS: An analytical, observational, retrospective case control study was conducted on 162 neonates from the Víctor Lazarte Echegaray Hospital, in the Neonatology Intensive Care Unit (NICU) and Neonatal Intensive Care Nursery (NICN). The study was divided into 81 cases and 81 controls, considering the inclusion and exclusion criteria. RESULTS: In our study population of 162 neonates, a frequency of mortality due to neonatal sepsis was found, with a SNAPPE II score ≥40 points, at 95.8% (68) p=0.01; while with a score of <40 points, it was 14.3% (13) p=0.01. The multivariate logistic regression model showed an association between SNAPPE II ≥40 points and mortality due to neonatal sepsis with an OR=1.29; 95% CI 1.13-1.56; P <0.001. A significant association was also shown between mechanical ventilation and mortality due to neonatal sepsis: OR=1.48, 95% CI, 1.46-151.9, p <0.01. The multivariate model was shown to be a strong predictor of mortality with AUC=0.991. CONCLUSIONS: A SNAPPE II score ≥40 points is a good predictor of mortality in neonatal sepsis (AUC=0.991) at the Víctor Lazarte Echegaray Hospital in the city of Trujillo
