OBJECTIVE: To determine if pregestational obesity and excessive weight gain during pregnancy are associated with the development of preeclampsia. MATERIAL AND METHODS: This is an observational, analytical case control study, retrospective in nature, with data collection from secondary sources obtained through the review of medical records from the Gynecology and Obstetrics service of the Hospital de la Amistad Perú - Corea Santa Rosa II-2. RESULTS: Significant risk factors for preeclampsia were identified in pregnant women from Piura, including associations with age, prolonged gestation, number of pregnancies, and inadequate prenatal care. Pre existing obesity, especially in BMI categories of overweight, obesity type 1, and obesity type 2, had a significant impact on the incidence of preeclampsia. Additionally, gestational weight gain, especially in the overweight range, was associated with increased risk. These findings emphasize the importance of addressing these factors in the early identification and management of preeclampsia risks in this specific population. CONCLUSION: A history of pregestational obesity and gestational weight gain are indeed associated with the onset of preeclampsia during pregnancy
