To identify if the level of anxiety is associated with the degree of functional disability in patients with rheumatoid arthritis. MATERIAL AND METHODS: An observational, cross-sectional, correlational study was conducted in 96 patients who met the selection criteria, who were given a data collection form, the Beck Anxiety Inventory to assess anxiety and the Health Assessment Questionnaire to assess functional disability. The value of the C-Reactive Protein (CRP) was obtained from the clinical records to determine inflammation. RESULTS: Of the analyzed patients, 87 (90.6%) and 9 (9.4%) were women and men, respectively. The average age was 57.4 ± 12.3 years. It was found that age (p = 0.01), time of illness (p = 0.01) and inflammatory state (p = 0.002) were associated with the degree of functional disability. There was a significant association between the level of anxiety and degree of functional disability (p=0.001), with a significant correlation between these variables. The association between the level of anxiety and the degree of functional disability was significant both in patients with a CRP value <5 mg / L (p=0.001) and in those with ≥ 5 mg / L (p=0.025). CONCLUSIONS: The level of anxiety is associated with the degree of functional disability in patients with rheumatoid arthritis.
