Objective: To determine if neonatal hyperglycemia is a risk factor for the development of ROP in infants under 37 weeks of gestational age. Material and methods: An analytical, observational, retrospective case-control type study was carried out, retrospective in which a total population of 195 preterm infants will be taken in the 2014-2018 period at the Belén de Trujillo Hospital, who met the criteria for Inclusion, of which, through a simple random selection, 44 premature infants who were diagnosed with retinopathy of prematurity were chosen for the case group; and for the control group, 88 premature infants were selected who had no diagnosis of retinopathy of prematurity; applying the statistical test of Odds ratio and chi square. Results: The percentage of patients with hyperglycemia who developed the disease (ROP) with 36.4% was obtained, while patients with hyperglycemia and did not develop the disease with 26.1%. However, no association was found between neonatal hyperglycemia and retinopathy of prematurity (X² = 1,474 p = 0.225), so hyperglycemia is not a risk factor for retinopathy of prematurity. Finally, a logistic regression was performed in which only oxygen therapy and weight less than 1500gr had a significance less than 0.05. Conclusion: Neonatal hyperglycemia is not a risk factor for retinopathy of prematurity.
