Objective: To determine if the positive water balance is considered a risk factor for mortality in patients with sepsis in the Regional Teaching Hospital of Trujillo. Material and methods: A retrospective cohort study was carried out in which 152 patients diagnosed with sepsis were included, according to selection criteria which were divided into 2 groups: patients with positive or no water balance; applying the relative risk, and the chi square statistical test. Results: Significant differences were observed for the frequencies of acute renal injury and hyperglycemia among patients in the exposed and unexposed cohort (p <0.05). The frequency of deaths in patients with a positive water balance was 45/76 = 59%. The frequency of deaths in patients without a positive water balance was 19/76 = 33%. The positive water balance is a risk factor for mortality in patients with sepsis with a relative risk of 2.36 which was significant (p <0.05). Conclusion: The positive water balance is considered a risk factor for mortality in patients with sepsis in the Regional Teaching Hospital of Trujillo.
