Objective: To determine if the rupture of membranes shortens the active phase of labour. Material and methods: We performed an analytical, observational, retrospective study of cases and controls. The study population consisted of 225 pregnant patients from Jerusalen Hospital La Esperanza, according to established selection criteria divided into two groups: 75 patients (cases) with or 150 without shortened active phase of labour (controls). Also, we applied chi-square test and odds ratio calculation. Results: The proportion of rupture of membranes in pregnant patients with shortened active phase of labour was 85.3%. The proportion of rupture of membranes in pregnant patients without shortened active phase of labour was 73.3%. Rupture of membranes is a factor that shortened the active phase of labour and we obtained an odds ratio of 2.12 which was statistically significant. In the multivariate analysis, the significance of association was verified for the variables: rupture of membranes, non-obesity and multiparity, in relation to the shortening of active phase labour. Conclusions: The rupture of membranes shortens the active phase of labour.
