Objective: To determine whether elevated mean platelet volume is an associated factor for metabolic syndrome in patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus in the noncommunicable disease program of the Hospital Distrital de Florencia de Mora. Material and methods: An observational, cross-sectional analytical study was carried out with 207 patients with a diagnosis of type 2 diabetes mellitus divided into two groups according to the presence or not of metabolic syndrome based on Adult Treatment Panel III criteria, regrouped according to the mean platelet volume high or normal which were obtained from the hemogram recorded; both variable data were collected on data collection sheets and then proceeded to statistical analysis using chi-square tests, Prevalence ratio, confidence interval, logistic regression. Results: We found that out of the total of 207 clinical histories, having metabolic syndrome increased the risk of having elevated mean platelet volume by 1.42 times compared to those who did not have metabolic syndrome. We also found that the mean age was 63.8 (p=0.04) and the mean Body Mass Index was 29.89 (p=0.00) being higher in patients with metabolic syndrome; likewise the variables of obesity (p=0.00), dyslipidemia (p=0.00), hypertension (p=0.00), were significantly higher in patients with metabolic syndrome; while no significant differences were recorded between patients with and without metabolic syndrome for the variables occupation, harmful use of tobacco and alcoholism. Conclusions: Elevated mean platelet volume is a factor associated with metabolic syndrome in patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus. Keywords: Mean platelet volume, metabolic syndrome, diabetes mellitus
