Objective: To establish that prematurity is a factor associated with poor academic performance in schoolchildren. Material and Method: An analytical, observational, case-control study was conducted from March to October 2018 in 1419 schoolchildren from two schools in Jaén, Cajamarca. The sample, obtained by formula, was divided into 473 cases with low academic performance and 946 controls. Results: The average age in the case group was 8.53 ± 1.55 compared to 8.63 ± 1.56 in the control group, without significant statistical difference (p> 0.05). The male gender was more frequent in both cases and controls (52.6% and 53.0% respectively) without significant difference. The low socioeconomic level was the most frequent with 48.4% and 46.3%, the parents' secondary education covered 54.3% and 53.0%, free union encompassed 42.5% and 43.0% and bullying represented 29.8% and 30.7% respectively, none of these variables showed significant difference (p> 0.05). The overall frequency of prematurity was 22.3% (316 patients). Prematurity showed no significant difference (p = 0.259), with OR of 0.856 (95% CI 0.654-1.121), being 20.5% in cases and 23.2% in controls. Conclusions: Age and gender were similar. The frequency of prematurity is considerable, although it was not a factor associated with poor academic performance. It is suggested the identification of the extreme stage of prematurity in future studies, with the possibility of being prospective and communicating to the authorities and parents about the frequency of bullying.
