The objective was to determine if passive smoking is associated with anemia in infants treated at Belen Hospital – Trujillo. Material and methods: The type of study was analytical cross-sectional and included 240 infants from Belen Hospital - Trujillo and data on exposure to passive smoking were sought, as well as the review of medical records to determine their hemoglobin value. Pearson's Chi square test and the Phi coefficient were used. The Prevalence Ratio with 95% confidence intervals was also calculated, the bivariate and multivariate analysis was performed to determine the association of the variables. Results: A moderate direct association was found between passive smoking and anemia (Phi=0.492), with a prevalence ratio of 3.45 (95% CI: 2.53 – 4.72; p<0.01). Of the total number of infants with anemia, 54.7% were exposed to environmental tobacco smoke; while 45.3% were not. Regarding the group without anemia, exposure was found in 9.7%; while 90.3% were not exposed. In the bivariate analysis, the only covariates that demonstrated a significant association with anemia were: Iron intake during the 3 trimesters of pregnancy (p=0.006) and Mother's education at secondary level (p=0.010) and higher (p=0.016). However, after logistic regression in the multivariate analysis, these did not remain as factors associated with anemia. Thus, only passive smoking was an independent associated factor for the development of anemia (RPa=3.065). Conclusion: There is a moderate direct association between passive smoking and anemia in infants treated at Belen Hospital – Trujillo.
