Objective: To determine the association between hyperglycemia and mortality in pediatric patients hospitalized in the intensive care unit. Methods: A retrospective cohort study design was utilized, which included pediatric patients between 1 month and 18 years of age, hospitalized in the PICU (Pediatrics Intensive Care Unit) for more than 48 hours throughout the year 2016. Demographic and clinical data were recorded. Results: 184 patients were included. The median age was 33.5 months, the mortality was 11.54%. The adjusted analysis showed that maximum glucose in 24 hours and scale value of PIM2 (Pediatric Index of Mortality) were identified as risk factors, in contrast to sex, age and Glasgow scale value as protective factors. Conclusion: This study demonstrates that there is not association between hyperglycemia and mortality in the population studied. It is advisable and of the utmost importance to conduct multicenter studies to determine the association between these variables and thus be able to establish prevention strategies and plans to execute an appropriate management.
