The aim of this research is to determine to what extent affects the consideration of the relationship of stiffness loss due to cracking when performing the seismic analysis of buildings in Lima. For this purpose, two fictitious structures were defined that meet the geometric characteristics of existing buildings in this city. The structures were modelled considering the stiffness under 4 approaches: Stiffness reduction factors shown in ACI 318-14, ASCE 41-13, rebar dependant stiffness and uncracked sections. These buildings were analysed through the linear static and dynamic analysis described in the national standard E.030-2016. These buildings were designed for all 8 cases according to the national standard E.060-2009. Finally, a nonlinear static analysis defined by the standard ASCE 41-13 was performed on the buildings with the designs resulting of the analysis with uncracked sections and cracked sections considering the rebar. As a result, the drifts increased by up to 95%, the basal shear force increased by up to 40%, the vibration periods increased by up to 75%, among others. It is concluded that considering the reduction of stiffness caused variation in the design of beams, therefore the increase of the construction cost. Likewise, it is revealed that not considering the reduction generates underestimation of the required seismic joint.
