This article characterizes the self-training techniques of nine specialized conference interpreters from Lima. Self-training in interpreters is understood as the independent carrying out of exercises learned in training environments and aimed at improving skills. Likewise, deliberate practice is based on practice activities designed to improve performance which require motivation, the definition of tasks with clear goals, time devoted to repeatedly perform tasks and feedback. Both concepts mingle in one theoretical category which was used to study an unexplored terrain in Lima’s population of professional interpreters: the continuation of independent practices aimed at maintaining and further enhancing skills. Interviews were conducted in order to identify, list and characterize the interpreters’ techniques based on the theoretical category outlined herein. The findings reveal that all nine interpreters continue to use self-training techniques, even after years of professional activity; said techniques’ dimensions, however, are not consistent with the study’s theoretical foundations.
