The goal of this study was to examine the relationship between family functioning and drive for thinness. The sample was composed by 107 adolescents (M = 16.37 years old, SD = 0.56, 57.9% males) from a public high school in Lima (Peru). The measures used were the Family Adaptation and Cohesion Scales - III (FACES-III) and the Eating Disorders Inventory - 2 (EDI-2). The results show a significant and negative correlation between family functioning and drive for thinness, but only among boys. Among girls, such a correlation was close to zero and not statistically significant. On the other hand, comparison analyses suggest that among boys, their perception of their family functioning is higher in cohesion and adaptability, compared with girls. By contrast, girls reported higher levels of drive for thinness. In conclusion, the hypotheses were partially confirmed and it is suggested to do more studies with male participants and with samples with similar sociodemographic characteristics to those in this study.
