Written by Kathryn Stockett, The Help is a controversial American novel dealing with the lives of African-American maids working for white households in Jackson, Mississippi in the 1960´s. In its first chapter, this diploma paper provides the theory regarding Critical Discourse Analysis and valuation. The second chapter includes an overview of U.S. racial relations, the sociocultural context influencing the writing and reception of the novel, and the theory regarding the racial imaginary. The third chapter is devoted to the analysis of utterances said by Aibileen as an illocutive agent to characterize her as a valuating subject.
