The Compensation Mechanisms for Ecosystem Services (MRSE), based on Payments for Ecosystem Services (PSE), are being implemented in Peru. This development is attributed, to a great extent, to the role of the Water and Sanitation Utilities (WSU). This study was carried out at the national level with a qualitative approach. It comprehensively analyzed the MRSE implementation process, based on the information provided through interviews with the stakeholders and documentary records from 2013 to 2019, related to the WSUs sample. The sampling methodology of the WSUs was of the intentional - stratified type (Teddlie and Yu, 2007). The main objective was to analyze how MRSEs can be implemented by WSUs at the national level. By fulfilling their purpose of ensuring the permanence of the benefits generated by ecosystems. The hypotheses were: (i) the channeling of economic resources depends on the fulfillment of all the stages and their components of the MRSE implementation process according to the MRSE Directive; (ii) The channeled economic resources are used in actions that ensure the benefits that ecosystems generate for WSUs; And (iii) the most frequent bottlenecks in the process mentioned above are institutional. There was no background of research with the same characteristics. However, the methodology was based mainly on Quintero and Pareja (2015). It was concluded that the process of implementation of the MRSE by the WSUs requires adjustments to fulfill its purpose: (I) the procedure for channeling economic resources by the WSUs can be shortened; (ii) a baseline and monitoring are required to prove the outcome and impact of MRSE interventions; and (iii) the strengthening of WSUs and other related stakeholders that act synergistically is needed.
