In Peru, as in other developing countries, there is a deficiency in the coverage of sanitation and potable water services, especially in rural areas, which negatively affects the health of the population. Ecological toilets appear to provide a solution to this problem, but the large amount of organic solid waste they generate and the lack of treatment technologies to handle the residue do not allow the advancement of this green option. This research aimed to evaluate the viability of producing a solid biofuel from human feces from ecological toilets through pyrolysis. Thus, a pre-treatment was proposed for the samples, which consisted of reducing humidity and particle size. Subsequently, these samples were pyrolyzed at 300, 400, and 500 °C in times of 60, 90, and 120 minutes, respectively, according to the treatments established in the 22 Box-Behnken experimental matrix with 4 central values. Finally, the quality of the fuels produced was characterized by elemental composition, thermogravimetric, and caloric power analyses. The results show that the pyrolized treatment at 500oC and 60 minutes produced a solid with a high calorific value, a high percentage of fixed carbon, and a low percentage of ashes. This research suggests that this solid waste has the potential to be transformed into an energetic char through pyrolysis. With this, the objective is to make ecological toilets a more viable option, as we not only provide a solution to the waste accumulation, but at the same time generate an economically viable alternative.
