A study of the genetic structure of the population of alpacas during the years 19982012 was carried out in order to improve the management of Germplasm Bank of Camelids in Quimsachata (INIA, Puno). The specific objectives of the study were i) to analyze the genetic structure of the population by pedigree analysis and ii) to determine the genetic trend for birth weight. Phenotypic and genealogy data were built, the response variable was birth weight. The Endog v4.8 and Poprep softwares were used for analyzing the genetic structure. An animal model was used to estimate genetic parameters and breeding values for birth weight, where sex, color, month and year of birth and age of dam at calving as covariate, were considered as fixed effects, and of direct genetic and maternal genetics as random effects. Animal model solutions were obtained using Asreml v3.0. The average of breeding value were calculated by calving year, and annual genetic trend was plotted. It was found greater genealogical information for maternal side than for paternal side. The average maximum, complete and equivalents generations were 1.33, 0.52 and 0.85, respectively, and the average inbreeding coefficient was 0.04%. The effective population size was 124 ± 54 heads. The generation interval calculated in two ways, a) the average age of parents at the birth of offspring kept for reproduction, and b) average age of parents at the birth of its progeny, were 5.2 and 5.68 years, respectively. The direct heritability for birth weight was 0.37 ± 0.03 when only the direct additive genetic effect was included in the model, and 0.04 ± 0.03 when the maternal genetic effect was added in the model. The population parameters indicated that there was not high inbreeding risk, and the management was appropriate to conservation practice in the Germplasm Bank. The genetic trend showed that breeding values for birth weight remained stable throughout the study period.
