The effect of marine shrimp aquaculture on macrobenthos in mangrove areas of the Chone River estuary in Ecuador was evaluated. The estuary was zoned into three sections with different levels of aquaculture incidence: low, medium and high estuary with low, moderate and high aquaculture activity. Sampling was carried out in August 2017 (dry season) and February 2018 (rainy season), a total of 3168 macrobenthic organisms were collected, 1428 correspond to the dry season and 1470 to the rainy season. The taxonomic analysis allowed to identify 4 edges, 8 classes and 38 families, the Phyllum Mollusca and Anelida were more abundant in relation to the edges Arthropoda and Nemertea. Parallel to the collection of the macrobenthos in both seasons the water quality parameters were analyzed such as: temperature (° C), pH, salinity (ppt), dissolved oxygen (mg / L) and the organic matter of the sediment, the results of the Oxygen and salinity showed a noticeable decrease during the rainy season along the estuary. The use of a survey as an additional tool, allowed to know the negative appreciation by the artisanal fishermen groups of the area about the shrimp industry. Despite the use of several tools such as taxonomic groups, analysis of water and sediment quality, and the use of the survey, it was not possible to see a clear result to make decisions and define whether or not marine shrimp aquaculture affects structure of the macrobenthos community in the estuary of the Chone River, for which it is necessary to recommend additional monitoring and studies by the corresponding entities.
