The objective of the study was to characterize the social, ecologic and economic resources of El Guzo, Penipe district, Chimborazo, Ecuador; a sector declared vulnerable because of the eruptive action of the Tungurahua volcano and with elderly producers, to develop and evaluate a model of sustainable use of the productive space of small scale agricultural ecosystems. 31 farms were characterized by 6 modules of an agricultural-socioeconomic survey. A multivariate analysis with the Ward method was used to establish 3 spatial categories or conglomerates, and a land use map was made. The sustainability, productivity and economics indexes were evaluated and agriculture and livestock key variables were selected based on a market analysis and a productive perception of the farmers, settling by multiple regression analysis the sustainable development models. The multiple regression models were submitted to a variance analysis to stablish their statistical significance; besides the impact of the ex-ante indexes (characterization) and ex–post by means of a T-Student test were evaluated. The average of the cultivated surface was 24060 m2 with families conformed by 2 to 4 members. The small units (up to 5000 m2) produce potatoes and Saanen goats; the ones between 5000 and 12000 m2 are dedicated to corn crop, pastures, and bovines and milk producer goats; and the properties with more than 12000 m2 produce corn crops, pasture and dairy cattle; only in this last group the economic indexes turn out to be positive ($ 3243 VAN, 10.98% of TIR) although not sustainable. The production systems are not sustainable, although the size of the farms is a mandatory source of variation. After the potential application of the development model (ex – post), in properties above the 12000 m2 the VAN increased to 17418 dollars with an annual production of 15545 kilograms of biomass, showing that a rural family of 3 to 4 members could obtain an approximate of 1450 dollars monthly of incomes, making it sustainable. The statistic comparison between the two sceneries: characterization and then the modelling, were significant because all the productive, economic and sustainability indexes, were superior in the ex post scenario in reference to the initial (ex-ante).
