Paco (Piaractus Brachypomus) is a fish native of South America with great interest for aquaculture, but few studies were performed on its nutrition. The objetive of the present study was to estimate essential amino acids (EAA) requirements based on amino acids muscle tissue composition using the formula suggested by Kaushik (1998), EAA requirement = (requirement for lysine X A/E ratio specific amino acid / A/E ratio for lysine). The A/E ratio was calculated using the formula suggested by Arai (1981), A/E ratio = [essential amino acid / total essential amino acids (plus cysteine and tyrosine) X 1000]. Six Paco juveniles were fed a diet containing 31.36% CP and 3400 Kcal kg-1 EM. The estimated essential amino acids requirements for Paco (g/16gN) were: Lysine 5.67, Arginine 7.53, Histidine 1.66, Isoleucine 2.27, Leucine 3.78, Methionine + Cysteine 1.78, Phenylalanine + Tyrosine 4.65, Threonine 2.69g / 16gN, Tryptophan 0.55 and Valine 3.01. Until dose-response experiments are carried out to determine the EAA requirements precisely, the estimated EAA values using muscle tissue EAA as proposed in this study could be used when formulating diets for Paco.
