The genetic improvement by induced mutations requires to determine the exact dose for each variety or a plants species. The objective of this experiment was to determine the dose of gamma irradiation to induce mutations in cañihua (Aellen), a valuable native plant species from the Andean region because of its nutritional content and adaptation to marginal areas. Dry seeds of cañihua ILLPA variety were irradiated with five doses of gamma rays (100, 200, 300, 400 and 500 Gy). Results in M1 generation produced delay germination process and reduction on number of seedling by effect of mutagenic treatment from94% to 55% at the control treatment and 500 Gy dose, respectively. Survival ranged from 90% to 8.33% at the same treatments either. Seedling height varied from 3.83 cmto 21.57 cmat 500 Gy dose in compared to control. Under field conditions, similar effect was on percentage of germination varying from 17.00% to 81.33%, the survival rate from 5.33% to 81.33% and plant height from 12.00 cm to 62.00 cmat the 500 Gy dose of and the control, respectively. In the M2 generation, all five doses of gamma rays induced mutations in cañihua. All doses resulted in a similar type of mutations spectrumsuch as change on leaf size, altering growing cycle and fasciation, predominating the latter one. In conclusion, a total of 139 plants were identified as mutant candidates, from which 90 had higher plant vigour, 11 increased leaves size; 17 longer life cycle and 21 plants with fasciation mutations type.
