Potato is one of the most important crop in Peru and the main phytosanitary factor limiting is late blight (LB), disease caused by the oomycete Phytophthora infestans (Mont.) de Bary. The objective of this work was to determine the effectiveness and efficiency of resistance inductors (RIs) to LB control. In laboratory and greenhouse experiments, plantlets of susceptible cv. Yungay were sprayed with one of the following commercial product: RI 1 (a.i silicon oxide), RI 2 (potassium phosphite), RI 3 (organic acids) and RI 4 (aluminum lignosulphonate) and compared to a control treatment (only water). Plantlets were inoculated with P. infestans at 1, 2, 3, 7 and 15 days after application RI products. High foliage protection values were obtained with RI 2 and RI 4, so these two products were selected to be sprayed in four potato cultivars with different levels of susceptibility on field experiments. Treatments included RI 2, RI 4 and/ or contact fungicide (CF) (alone or alternated) and a decision support system (DSS, using systemic and/or CF). Evaluations of disease severity were recorded weekly and the relative area under the disease progress curve (RAUDPC) was calculated furtherly. Yield data, Environmental impact (EI) and Marginal Rate of Return (MRR) were registered and calculated in all experiments. Tubers harvested in the field experiment were taken to the laboratory and then inoculated with P. infestans, with the aim of evaluate the necrotic tissue percentages. In conclusion, the most effective (low RAUDPC, high yield and low EI) and efficient (MRR > 50%) treatments were RI 2 and CF alone or alternated in susceptible cultivars; RI 2 and RI 4 alternated with CF, and CF only in a moderately resistant cultivar; and CF only in a resistant cultivar. In addition, tubers from plants sprayed with RIs resulted in lower values of necrotic tissue than the control treatment.
