Zinc is one of the essential nutrients for human health. Its deficiency affects approximately 30 % of world population and is caused by poor diet quality and low Zn intake. Potato (Solanum tuberosum L.) is an economically important crop and is a staple food in Peru, thus agronomic biofortification is considered a suitable strategy to increase the content of Zn in potato tubers, enhancing human health. A field experiment was set up during the crop season 2017-2018 in an acidic soil of the Mantaro Valley to evaluate the response of four potato varieties (Canchán, Perricholi, Peruanita and Yungay), to soil application of five doses of zinc (0, 4, 8, 16 and 32 kg Zn/ha). A split-plot design with four blocks, was used. Potato varieties were placed in plots and Zn doses in subplots. Shoot biomass, total and commercial tuber yield and the content of Zn in shoots and tubers (skin and flesh) were measured. Zn fertilization did not significantly affect shoot biomass, commercial and total potato yield, but the yield of the white varieties (Canchán, Perricholi and Yungay) outperformed the yellow variety (Peruanita). The Zn content in shoot and tuber skin increased according to the applied Zn dose. Zinc applied at a rate of 32 kg ha-1 exceeded the control in the Zn concentration in shoot in all varieties. The Zn concentrations in the skin obtained with the application of Zn doses from 16 kg ha-1 exceeded the control in all varieties. Zn concentration in flesh was maximum with the application of 16 kg Zn ha-1 in the Canchán, Perricholi and Yungay varieties and with 8 kg Zn ha-1 in the Peruanita variety. The apparent efficiency of Zn recovery decreases as the applied doses increase, in all varieties. The results obtained seem to indicate a very limited effect of Zn application on the biofortification of potato tubers in the Mantaro valley.
