The research aims to describe the knowledge, attitudes and practices of mothers or caregivers of children between 6 and 35 months on micronutrients. There was a qualitative research in 8 sectors of the Health Post Viña San Francisco, Santa Anita, during November 2015 until june 2016, where qualitative techniques (semi-structured interviews and focus groups) were used. The design and validation of the interview, semi-structures guides and focal groups were based on the following topics: anemia, iron and micronutrients. At the end of the study, there were 43 and 8 semi-structured interviews to mothers and health personnel respectively and 2 focus groups of mothers or career. The results show that the mothers have different concepts of anemia and how they affect the anemia in children, many of their answers are related to the consequences and symptoms, in addition, it was perceived that the terms “disease“ and “brain development“ were taken with the great interest and positive attitude to follow the consumption of micronutrients. Mothers reported that beans, vegetables, dairy products and poultry are food rich in iron. Likewise, mothers define vitamins as chispitas, micronutrients good for the brain and prevent anemia because only contain iron. They also know micronutrients as sparks, micronutrients and vitamins and define it as a vitamin for the brain that prevents anemia and contains iron. Many micronutrient benefits that are mentioned are not exclusively a consequence of micronutrients such as height, weight, growth, development and appetite, so mothers abandon the use of micronutrients as they do not observe changes in their children. Most mothers prepared food with 2 spoons of warm water and consumed it before the 20 minutes, however the micronutrients were prepared with the soups. The attitude of all mothers and health staff is positive with the initiative of the Ministry of Health in the delivery of micronutrients, Therefore, as long as there is ignorance of anemia as a disease that affects the brain development of the child, it will not be possible to internalize and achieve the change of attitude of the mothers, because the underlying problem is not micronutrients, a pending job to improve communications strategies.
