The purpose of the present degree project is to suggest actions for integrating an environmental management system (EMS) with the certified quality management system (QMS) of the company Vera & Moreno S.A., Consultores de Ingeniería. The work started out with an assessment of the company's QMS relative to ISO 9001 :2008 anda diagnosis of its current enviromnental situation based on the requirements of ISO 14001:2004. To this end, meetings with senior management were coordinated, the QMS documentation was revised, the company's facilities were inspected and the staff was interviewed. With the gathered information, checklists based on both standards were appiied; the results were very good for the QMS and unsatisfactory for the EMS. Also, the environmentaI aspects and impacts generated by the organization were evaluated and the most significan! among them were: generation of hazardous solid waste and energy and paper consumption. An integration plan was then developed, defining the inherent benefits and challenges, the selected type of integration (total integration), the initial organization of the QMS, the future organization of the integrated management system (IMS), the schedule of activities for the plan implementation and the commitment of senior management. Based on the integration plan, the IMS documents were developed, including the IMS Manual, quality and environmental policy, procedures, instructions and forms, sorne of which were adapted from the QMS documents to include EMS requirements, and others were prepared exclusively to comply with ISO 14001 :2004 requirements. Finally, the initial phase of the implementation of the new EMS was carried out, through the definition and execution of goals, targets and environmental programs, and by means of staff awareness and training sessions.
