Foodborne illness, as well as the use of contaminated water for different purposes, are two major global health and economic problems. National and international standards set out requirements that food and water must meet to ensure their safety. Laboratories are the bodies in charge of assessing compliance with these requirements; therefore, they must be certified organizations that ensure the issuance of reliable results. The present study develops how the author, through his academic training and work experience, contributed to maintaining the laboratory’s technical competence and achieving the established objectives. In the first stage, the analysis of food and water samples was conducted in compliance with standard NTP ISO/IEC 17025 to ensure the results were valid. In addition, the audits carried out by INACAL (National Institute of Quality) were successfully passed, demonstrating the laboratory’s technical competence. In the second stage, as part of the company's goal to participate in the environmental sector, new test methods for analyzing different water matrices were certified. Besides, proficiency tests were passed, which demonstrated the laboratory’s accurate performance in carrying out the new analyses. Finally, in the third stage, the parasitology laboratory was implemented, and validation was used as a tool to find a method that would allow the analysis of helminth eggs in two types of water, proving that the chosen method is adequate for the intended purposes.
