El Angolo Hunting Reserve (CCEA in Spanish) is located amid the ecoregion of dry forests of Piura in Peru, and is characterized by a warm and a seasonally dry weather. In Sauce Grande sector of this protected natural area, the white-tailed deer (Odocoileus virginianus) trophy hunting has been taking place. To make a sustainable use of the species, taking accurate management decisions, it is necessary to know its habitat requirements (or components), and their status in the area. The aim of this study was to determine if CCEA contains elements on the surface to bring sufficient cover for white-tailed deer (Odocoileus virginianus) in a moment that represents the dry season. Habitat Suitability Index (HSI) methodology was considered in this assessment, which consisted in estimating the HSI for each cover’s subcomponents: thermal cover and protective cover. A spatial analysis was carried out based on the identification of vegetation aggregates on high resolution satellite images, which was validated by field sampling, and the estimation of the surface that each element occupies in the area. IH metrics were developed for each cover’s subcomponent, on a range from 0 to 1, where 0 means the most inadequate amount of space, while 1 means the most adequate, good or ideal space (habitat). Final results indicated that suitability for cover in area of study can be considered good, and it also applies for each subcomponent: thermal cover (36%, HSI=1) and protective cover (74%, HSI=1).
