The main objective of this research was to determine the sustainability of cocoa (Theobroma cacao L.) production systems in Santo Domingo – Ecuador. The specific objectives were: i) characterize and typify cocoa-producing farms; ii) analyze the sustainability of cocoa farm production and iii) to evaluate the effect of cultural practices in disease control of cocoa. For the characterization, 81 farms, located in the Luz de America, Puerto Limón and San Jacinto del Bua were evaluated. The survey determined the characteristics of the producer (age, education, andothers) and the farm, the production of cocoa and typology of the farms. The Hierarchical Cluster analysis, (Ward method and Euclidean distance of twenty) pointed out four groups of producers with particular characteristics. The analysis of sustainability, considered the economic, ecological and socio-cultural environment dimensions suggested by Sarandonet al., (2006), indicating values of 1.92, 2.0 and 1.99, respectively. The overall sustainability index was 1.97. The analysis of each farm indicated that 48% of these are sustainable. To evaluate the methods of disease control of the cocoa fruit, one experiment was carried out in producer field, in the locality of Puerto Limón, 16 treatments and three repetitions in a complete random block design (DBCA). In all the treatments were carried out cultural practices to control weeds, pruning, sick fruits elimination and lime (CaCO3) application. Treatments based on Chlorothalonil, Pyraclastrobin, Bacillus subtilis and fertilization presented less affectation of “moniliasis“, “black pod“ and premature wilting of fruits “cherelle wilt” and increased production of healthy fruits, cocoa wet and dry weight. The treatments that only received fertilization, together with the control plots, presented the greatest affectation of fruits.
