The objective of the present study was to evaluate the effects of the essential oil (EO) of oregano Origanum vulgare as a dietary supplement in the feeding of juvenile red-tailed shad Brycon amazonicus on the productive performance, health status of the fish and resistance to the septicemic disease produced by Aeromonas hydrophila. The fish, with an initial average weight and length of 156.4 g ± 18.4 cm and 21.9 ± 0.8 respectively, were randomly distributed in concrete tanks (10 fish per tank). They were fed a commercial diet supplemented with 0%, 0.5%, 1.0%, and 1.5% oregano essential oil for 35 days. At the end of the experimentation, a better acceptance of the balanced feed in the control diet (0%) was obtained, in addition to a better condition factor, therefore the viscerosomatic and visceral fat indices were higher. At the same time, the highest dose (1.5%) was significantly higher with respect to hematocrit percentage and hemoglobin concentration, however, the lymphocyte count was higher at the lowest dose (0.5%). Significant differences were shown in muscle protein accumulation, with the 0.5% dose having the highest concentration compared to the 1.5% dose. All groups supplemented with EO of oregano Origanum vulgare showed reduced survival after bacterial challenge with A. hydrophila compared to the control group, in greater proportion doses of 0.5% and 1.5%. These results indicated that the use of EO from oregano Origanum vulgare could improve hematological parameters in the culture of red-tailed shad Brycon amazonicus, in lower doses and longer experimental times.
