The objective of the study was to assess the effect of physical activity (swimming) on blood lipid profile in rats fed diets containing trans-fatty acids (TFA). 24 rats Holtzman males from four months of age, with average weight of 319 g were used and the experimental period was eight weeks. During week 1, 12 rats received a standard diet and the other 12 rats received the standard diet mixed with commercial margarine containing 5.3% of TFA. From week 2 to week 8, one-half of the animals in each group (6) were subjected to one of the following treatments: T1, Standard diet - No physical activity; T2, Standard diet - Swimming; T3, Standard diet with TFA-No physical activity; T4, Standard diet with TFA - Swimming. The rats of the treatments T2 and T4 were forced to swim for 40 minutes a day for five days per week. At the end of the experiment, blood samples from each of the experimental animals were drawn to determine serum concentrations of total cholesterol (TC), triglycerides (TGs), HDL-cholesterol and LDL-cholesterol. The results showed that, with the exception of the concentration of TGs, the other parameters were not influenced significantly (P>0.05) by treatments. The concentration of TGs was lower (P<0.05) in the groups of animals that were subjected to swim. In conclusion, physical activity (swimming) decreases the concentration of blood TGs in rats consuming diets containing trans fatty acids.
