The objective of the present investigation was to determine the tolerance of the Roman lettuce (Latuca sativa var. Longifolia) to the salts, because the salinity limits the crops in general and particularly herbaceous plants because of their high sensitivity. Twenty one seedlings of lettuce were transplanted to open field pots with sandy textured soil, which were irrigated with water of different concentration of salts: 0.75; 1.4; 2.1; 3.4; 4.4; 6 and 7 dS.m-1. Three replicates were performed for each concentration; irrigation was given according to the water requirements of the plant throughout the vegetative period. After harvesting, the following parameters were measured: fresh weight, dry weight, plant length, plant moisture, and leaf element concentration, in order to assess whether the salinity affected the quality parameters of the crop. It was found that with the conductivity of 4,4 dS.m-1 in the irrigation water (T5) the best fresh total weight of 250,47 grams was obtained. The largest plant length was 21,5 cm was also obtained with the mentioned treatment. A saline concentration of 2.1 dS.m-1 yielded the highest dry weight of 24.66 grams in treatment 3.The highest concentration of foliar elements for each treatment was: calcium 1,05 percent, magnesium 0,33 percent in treatment 2 of 1,4 dS.m-1; the highest concentration of chlorine, sodium and sulfate found was 2,94; 1,81 and 0.99 percent, respectively, in treatment 7 of 7 dS.m-1, and the highest potassium concentration was 3,71 percent with treatment 5 of 4,4 dS.m-1. The best crop development was obtained with treatment three of 2,1 dS.m-1 as it obtained the highest dry weight. However, the crop was not significantly affected by any of the treatments applied.
