The objective of this research was to evaluate the sustainability of banana production systems in Babahoyo, Los Rios, Ecuador. From a population of 193 producers, a sample was taken (n=65), then with the surveys that were taken from this sample, the farms were characterized through a cluster analysis by Ward's method with a Euclidean square distance of 90, at this distance, eight groups were identified. The sustainability of these farms was assessed by selecting the participating farmers, defining the dimensions and attributes of analysis, constructing the indicators to be evaluated, collecting data and integrating the results. Then we proceeded to elaborate an action plan that contributes to sustainability, for this purpose we considered the transversal design with a descriptive scope with the purpose of describing variables and analyzing their incidence and interrelation at a given moment. The indicators and sub-indicators established to assess sustainability, as well as the elements of the action plan, were validated by consulting experts using the Delphi method, and then the Kendall coefficient and Cronbach's alpha were used to determine the coincidence between the experts. From the results it can be highlighted that 100 % of the people in charge of the farms are men, that 85 % of these agro-ecosystems have complete infrastructure, that the non-diversification of crops, according to the applied methodology, the management of the crop system, the frequency of fungicide application, the lack of cultivated area for selfconsumption, limit the sustainability of these production systems. Then with these results, the action plan was designed, which contains desired objectives where, among others, it was defined to implement sustainable crop management methods, as an expected goal it was established that environmentally friendly practices are carried out in 90 % of the small farms at the end of the first year, and as actions to be taken it was outlined to introduce agroecological, organic and conservationist practices in banana production systems. From the results obtained it is concluded that aspects such as crop system management, crop diversity and integrated pest management could be improved by reducing the intensive use of pesticides, and introducing agroecological alternatives to increase crop diversity and pest control, in the short and medium term the proposed action plan considers improving with objectives, goals and actions the parameters that limit sustainability in banana production systems.
