In Peru the guanaco (Lama guanicoe) is represented by the sub-species Lama guanicoe cacsilensis, which is in danger of extinction and it is protected by the government. The distribution of guanaco population is restricted in the north to the National Reserve of Calipuy and in the south to the departments of Ayacucho, Ica and Arequipa, mainly on community lands and in the National Reserve Salinas and Aguada Blanca. The composition of the diet of the guanaco (Lama guanicoe) was determined by the micro histological analysis of feces during the months of April and November of 2004, in the department of Ayacucho next to the Pampa Galeras National Reserve, on community lands belonging to the Rural Community of Huallhua and Annexes. The main characteristics of the study area were assessed. The vegetation cover was in average 51.7%, which was dominated by thorny shrub species associated with prairie grasses of the high Andes: Margyricarpus pinnatus (43.77%), Junellia juniperina (12.74%) and Stipa depauperata (11.08%). Similarly, the diet was predominated by grasses and shrub species such as: Baccharis tricuneata and Adesmia miraflorensis. The guanaco diet differed in composition and diversity according to the season in which it was evaluated. The Ivlev selectivity index, shows that the species Adesmia miraflorensis, Ephedra america and Opuntia spp., were positive and close to one, indicating a high preference of these species by the guanacos. At the contrary, the species Plantago lamprophila, Tagetes multiflora, Gnaphalium lacteum obtained a negative value (rejection)
