In the last ten years, the avocado (Persea americana Mill.) crop has experienced significant growth, especially on the Peruvian coast, becoming one of the most promising crops for agroexport. The objectives of the work were: to describe the physical context and characterize organic avocado orchards, to compare the effectiveness of different organic sources on yield and size of 'Hass' avocado fruit, and to evaluate the sustainability of organic avocado orchards. The description of the physical environment of the agroecosystem was carried out using secondary information. All organic producers with certification or in the process of transitioning to organic were surveyed, records were reviewed and visits were made to farms located in five districts in the provinces of Huaura and Barranca. The effect of five organic sources on fruit yield and size were evaluated; and the multi-criteria methodology was applied to determine sustainability. The study area has favorable climatic conditions for organic avocado production; soil organic matter content is low in all locations, but water resources are available throughout the year, although with inadequate infrastructure. Yields were found to be low, with the main influencing factors being the irrigation system, organic matter input, phosphorus and potassium application, number of day laborers and foliar applications. Net income was affected by the yield of fruits according to their quality and the number of certifications. Three groups of farms were formed, taking into account farm size, irrigation system, certifications, technical factors, yield and profitability as differential aspects. The organic fertilizers tested significantly increased the yield of fruits of highly exportable sizes and categories. All of the organic avocado farms evaluated were found to be sustainable. However, the critical points identified need to be improved through the implementation of localized irrigation systems, increased inputs of organic sources and better technical management of the crop to improve yields, especially in groups I and III. These actions will contribute to improving the sustainability of organic avocado farms in the study area.
