One of the most important tools to define strategies for management and conservation of natural resources are the thematic maps. However, before being used to make decisions, the maps should be assessed to establish their accuracy. From the Ecosystem Tropical Andes map, which covers an area of 1 542 644 km2 and was prepared to a work scale of 1/250 000, the part corresponding to the 380 km2 of Machupicchu Historic Sanctuary was extracted, generating a base map of their assessment. The information generated from the field work was ordered in an Error Matrix for calculating the thematic accuracy of the base map. It was found that there is a moderate correspondence, nearby strong, between what is represented on the map with reality (Kappa index = 0.72); then, by visual interpretation of high-resolution satellite images the map was adjusted with a work scale of 1/10 000, thus an ecological system initially proposed in the assessed map was discarded and the limits that do occur were adjusted to the reality of the Sanctuary. Finally, 12 ecological systems was obtained, 11 natural and 1 manmodified, 41% are forest type, 44% grassland type, 10 % nival and the remaining 5% corresponds to the modified areas.
