Dysphania ambrosioides (L.) Mosyakin & Clemants, commonly referred to as paico, is a species believed to be native to tropical America. Various properties are attributed to this herb in ancient culture. The main objective of the present study was to characterize the main metabolites of paico leaves, in addition to their respective antioxidant capacity. The total of phenolic compounds evaluated spectrophotometrically was 13.60 AGE (gallic acid equivalent) / g dry base (bs); while the antioxidant capacity measured by the TEAC and ORAC tests were 93.3 and 571 μmol trolox equivalent (TE) / g bs, respectively. By mass spectrometry (LC-MS / MS), 20 polyphenols were revealed: vanillic acid, a derivative of pcoumaroyl-hexoside acid, three quercetin-rhamnoside derivatives, a quercetin derivative, two derivatives of kaempferol acetyl-furanoside- rhamnoside and twelve derivatives of kaempferol rhamnoside. The quantification by UPLC®-PDA of the phenolic compounds totaled 645.11 mg / 100 g bs (of which the phenolic acids are 41.37 mg / 100 g bs and flavonoids, 603.74 mg / 100 g bs), highlighting the high amount of kaempferol over the other compounds. The analysis of lipophilic metabolites, reported important fatty acids, being in order of importance: Linoleic > linolenic > palmitic > oleic (35.8; 35.4; 26.3 and 2.5 percent, respectively). On the other hand, α-, β-, γ- and δ-tocopherol were found in amounts of 28.78, 7.19, 7.96 and 3.27 µg / g bs, respectively. Likewise, the analysis of terpenes mainly found and in order of importance: α-terpinene, limonene, p-cymene, thymol, γ-terpinene, carvacrol, isoascaridol and α-pinene (1489.65; 313.1; 104.8; 49.4; 45.1; 22.9; 8.19 and 4.32 mg / 100 g bs, respectively). It is concluded that, according to the results obtained, paico leaves are a varied source of bioactive compounds: polyphenols, terpenes, fatty acids, tocopherols and of important antioxidant activity (TEAC and ORAC), which would make their application interesting in various industries.
