Sugarcane is a very important crop in Ecuador, not only for its high production per year, to obtain sugar and biofuels, but also because it generates more than 70,000 jobs per year, in addition to the economic movement produced by sugar mills. The annually harvested area varies between around 90,000 and 130,000 hectares, 77 percent of which are located in the Province of Guayas. This research had as its general objective to determine the sustainability of small sugarcane-producing farms in the canton of Milagro, Guayas, located in the south-central part of the coastal region of Ecuador. Sugarcane occupies about 50 percent of the cultivated area in Guayas. The specific objectives were to characterize the sugarcane-producing farms and to determine their economic, social and ecological sustainability. In addition, a historical varietal analysis of the last five and ten years of sugarcane cultivation was carried out and the influence of agoste (water withdrawal) on the maturation and yield of the crop was determined. The characterization of the farms was carried out through a field survey to 213 producers from a universe of 422 Agricultural Production Units (UPAs). The sustainability of the UPAs was determined according to the Sarandón multi-criteria analysis methodology. It was found that the majority of sugarcane producers have incomes above $500, are over the age of 40 and have high school studies. Almost all of the respondent’s own plots of less than 20 ha, which are irrigated by gravity, obtaining average yields of 80 to 90 t/ha. The general sustainability index is 1.99, lower than the reference value of 2, which makes the productive system non sustainable. It is only sustainable in the social dimension but not in the economic and ecological dimensions. The best performing sugarcane varieties in the period 2012-2021 were ECU-01 and EC-02. Regarding agoste, it was determined that it is not necessary to irrigate after the ninth month of development, since the results obtained with the quality and agronomic variables did not show statistical variability between treatments. Based on the results obtained, it is recommended to promote more sustainable agriculture with good agricultural practices in sugarcane areas.
