The work was carried out in order to (i) characterize and determine the sustainability of the traditional farming systems of the province of Carhuaz, Ancash, Peru. The specific objectives were (a) to describe the location area of the traditional farming systems in Carhuaz, Ancash, Perú; (b) to characterize the traditional farming systems of Carhuaz, Ancash, Peru; (c) To determine the economic sustainability of the traditional farming systems of Carhuaz, Ancash, Peru; (d) To determine the social sustainability of the traditional farming systems of Carhuaz, Ancash, Peru; y (e ) To determine the ecological sustainability of the traditional farming systems of Carhuaz, Ancash, Peru. In order to make the description of the study area were drawn up maps, using the program ArcGIS 10.3 and the National Charter was used as a source (scale 1:1000,000). Surveys included questions related to economic, social and ecological aspects of the agricultural parcel were used for characterization. The work was made with a population of 2900 agricultural producers, of which a sample was taken (n = 339). In order to evaluate the sustainability of the agricultural parcels was used an adaptation of the “Multicriteria analysis“ and was used the sample indicated above, and the information was obtained through a survey using a questionnaire with closed and categorized questions related to the three dimensions of sustainability. The field of study, located in the eastern area of the Cordillera Negra in Carhuaz, Ancash, covers a total area of 13,282 ha it has a varied topography, ranging from flat or slightly sloping areas to very steep slopes. By altitude and availability of irrigation water, the territory is divided into lower area (2,460 to 2,900 masl) and Uptown (2901 to 3900 m.a.s.l). In the lower area predominate the crop system of fruit, alfalfa, tuna, corn and breeding (guinea pigs, birds, and pigs) and systems in the upper predominate tubers (potato, oca, olluco), minor cereals (wheat, barley) legumes (beans, peas) and againg (guinea pigs, sheep, cattle). In Uptown, polyculture and varied of breeding are mostly. Predominate here a smallholding, less than 1.0 ha. Agricultural farmers, use improved seed mainly. The fertilizers and pesticides are used only for potato, corn, fruit and alfalfa. The common education level of the peasants is the incomplete primary and they are too reluctant to receive training. There is an important difference in incomes of rural familie , it is greater in the lower area. But in recent years it has greatly improved access to basic services. Economic sustainability is different in each area of study; but in both cases, most of the evaluated variables, have values far from optimal levels of sustainability. The components of social sustainability, had quite similar values in the two areas of study; but in both cases they are far from optimal levels of sustainability. Ecological sustainability is also different in each area of study, and also in this case, they had values far from optimal levels of sustainability.
