Diet is a determining factor since the prenatal phase, being necessary a good source of fatty acids to ensure a good development of the mother and her offspring such as spirulina (Arthrospira platensis). The aim of the present study was to evaluate the fatty acid profile in the liver of Holtzman rats supplemented with spirulina and its effect in the enzymatic activity, the weight of the liver and visceral fat, the food intake and the evolution of body weight of rats and their offspring. Thirty rats were randomized into 3 treatments: 0 percent (control), 5 percent, and 10 percent of spirulina in the diet. The rats were fed for 5 weeks corresponding to 3 weeks of pregnancy and 2 weeks of lactation. At the end of the experimental phase, the rats were sacrificed and the analyses were performed. The data were analyzed under a completely randomized design, data with normal distribution were analyzed using an ANOVA and the comparison between means was made (p<0.05) by the Tukey test; not normal data, by the non-parametric Kruskall-Wallis test. The results revealed that spirulina intake increases (p<0.05) the concentration of linoleic and arachidonic acids and the total content of -6, saturated and polyunsaturated acids in the liver. Spirulina did not affect the enzymatic activity of the enzymes Δ-6-elongase-desaturase and Oleyl-Coa in the liver. Supplementation with 5 percent spirulina decreased (p<0.05) the weight of the liver but did not influence in the weight of visceral fat. Food consumption with 10 percent of spirulina increased (p<0.05) in the second week of pregnancy and lactation without influencing in the weight gain. And finally the birth weight of the offspring was greater (p<0.05) with the supplementation of 10 percent of spirulina in the diet of the mothers.
