The potato (Solanum Tuberosum) is a native Andean product included in the global food system. Peru generates 1.2 per cent of the world´s potato production and 1.9 per cent of potato seed production worldwide. Despite its importance in nutrition, potato harvesting in Peru does not reach the average yield of other countries since it is affected by various problems; among these is the lack of development of more efficient and affordable technologies to produce potato seeds which, if addressed, would increase the level of production, decrease its cost and allow competitiveness in global exchange. Incorporating better seed will create lower costs, higher yield, better crop quality and a healthier product. In Peru, only a 0.2 to 0.4 percent of potato seeds are Certified Seeds. By increasing the use of certified seeds to 1percent the added value would rise to 50 percent approximately, generating a greater socioeconomic achievement for the country.
