The present study was carried out on Apis mellifera in the apiary of the Universidad Nacional Agraria La Molina (UNALM) with the objective of determining the effect of powdered sugar on the number of varroa captured in a floor trap and the percentage or rate of infestation of varroa in adult bees (VIRAB) in the period from October to December 2017. Twenty hives were used in the brood chamber equipped with a varroa trap: 10 bee hives under experimental treatment with 100 g powdered sugar per bee hive and 10 control bee hives, without treatment. The powdered sugar was applied as dust in three opportunities on each hive, one per month. Before sugar treatment, samples of adult bees were taken from each hive to estimate the VIRAB. Varroa captured in the trap was counted 24 hours after each treatment. The number of adult bees, the number of brood combs and the number of food reserve combs per hive were also determined. Data were analyzed using Student's t-tests and Mann Whitney's. The number of varroa captured per hive as a total average was 174.4 and 96.5 varroa in treated and untreated hives, respectively, with significant differences between treatments. The VIRAB was 6.108% and 4.972% in treated and untreated hives, without significant differences. The results show that the powdered sugar, applied by dusting in the hives, influenced the detachment of the mites from the body of adult bees, their subsequent fall and capture in traps; however, it did not influence on VIRAB. Powdered sugar had no effect on the number of adult bees, number of brood combs and number of food reserve combs per hive, and no significant differences were observed between treated and untreated hives in these variables. The results suggest the use of powdered sugar within an integrated beehive management program
